In the UK, a lot of rubbish is buried in landfill sites, but the amount of land available for this is running out fast. What’s more, some of the materials deposited in landfill sites can harm the environment over many years.
The great thing is that rubbish can be recycled into brand new materials and products. And, if we recycle our rubbish, we won’t need to use as many of the earth’s natural, limited resources.
European and UK governments have set targets for local authorities to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and increase the amount recovered for recycling. If we fail to meet these targets fines will be imposed – so not recycling could end up costing everyone, but most of all the environment.
The great thing is that it’s easy to recycle!
