recycling at work

Championing recycling at work has obvious benefits:

  • It demonstrates to your staff and customers that you are taking a responsible approach to waste management and sustainability
  • It can save money by reducing waste management costs
  • It can help towards achieving ISO14001 environmental accreditation
  • It can help us achieve the cultural shift towards becoming a recycling society

Getting a recycling scheme started:

  1. Nominate somebody to be responsible for co-ordinating the scheme – your recycling 'Champion'. If your company or building has a facilities department enlist their help to ensure your scheme is a success.
  2. Contact your local Think Cans centre for help and advice. They can supply posters, leaflets and you may be eligible to receive a free start-up supply of recycling boxes and bags - find your local thinkcans centre - click here
  3. Set up collection points for recycling – place containers close to vending machines, in canteens or by recycling facilities for other materials, e.g. paper.
  4. Communicate regularly with staff to remind them about the recycling scheme. Use notice boards, newsletters, intranet, email, word of mouth – and shout about how well the scheme is doing!

You recycle at home - why not THINK about recycling CANS at work too?

HELPFUL TIPS:

  • Tell the cleaner! Make sure the cleaner is aware that the aluminium recycling bins should not be emptied into the general rubbish but saved for recycling.
  • Ask your local can recycling centre if they can give you information about how many kilos have been recycled. This will keep staff motivated and encourage them to recycle more.
  • Want publicity? We can help! If you recycle aluminium cans to raise funds for a charity or other good cause, why not drop us an email and tell us all about your scheme. We can help to publicise your efforts and provide a positive message in the media about your company's environmental commitment.
