Championing recycling at work has obvious benefits:
- It demonstrates to your staff and customers that you are taking a responsible approach to waste management and sustainability
- It can save money by reducing waste management costs
- It can help towards achieving ISO14001 environmental accreditation
- It can help us achieve the cultural shift towards becoming a recycling society
Getting a recycling scheme started:
- Nominate somebody to be responsible for co-ordinating the scheme – your recycling 'Champion'. If your company or building has a facilities department enlist their help to ensure your scheme is a success.
- Contact your local Think Cans centre for help and advice. They can supply posters, leaflets and you may be eligible to receive a free start-up supply of recycling boxes and bags - find your local thinkcans centre - click here
- Set up collection points for recycling – place containers close to vending machines, in canteens or by recycling facilities for other materials, e.g. paper.
- Communicate regularly with staff to remind them about the recycling scheme. Use notice boards, newsletters, intranet, email, word of mouth – and shout about how well the scheme is doing!

HELPFUL TIPS:
- Tell the cleaner! Make sure the cleaner is aware that the aluminium recycling bins should not be emptied into the general rubbish but saved for recycling.
- Ask your local can recycling centre if they can give you information about how many kilos have been recycled. This will keep staff motivated and encourage them to recycle more.
- Want publicity? We can help! If you recycle aluminium cans to raise funds for a charity or other good cause, why not drop us an email and tell us all about your scheme. We can help to publicise your efforts and provide a positive message in the media about your company's environmental commitment.
